Check out this project by Warrick Weber and team down in Q town.

"The Jagged Edge concept is the work of Warrick Weber, a Structural Engineer specialising in the design of architecturally significant buildings based on structural simplicity. Jagged Edge has been developed by a team of exceptional designers based in New Zealand and Australia, combining a wealth of international experience.

Inspired by the magnificent views and secluded location, Jagged Edge has become one with the surrounding landscape. With the use of glass we have lost the built form and our strong concrete structure becomes an extension of the surrounding mountainside. The unique location has enabled us to maximise views without inhibiting privacy - allowing the design to grow out of the hillside and express a strong functional form that is both delicate and masculine.

Jagged Edge is a spectacular structure.

The Conceptual Design of Jagged Edge is simple - a tension structure supporting a large concrete roof. The tension cables are anchored back into the natural rock. Once this structure has been established it allows the designer to create spaces which are free and uninterrupted. In this case, the first floor is suspended from the roof, again using tension cables. The perimeter walls are constructed entirely of glass making the most of Jagged Edge's magnificent, sweeping 270° views.

In terms of architectural and environmental design, consideration to form was imperative. The angle of the glass to the roof structure at the apex and the angle of the roof structure itself were the starting points for the geometric design of the house. These angles strongly mirror what is commonly found in the natural geology of the area. The unrestrained use of glass allows the structure to integrate with the landscape.

Set on the verge of a rocky out-crop, amongst a tall forest of pines and native bush, Jagged Edge comes face-to-face with natural beauty. Surrounded by rugged mountains and reflected in the waters of Lake Wakatipu beneath, Jagged Edge is located on a 14,600m2 site within the exclusive Lake Ridge Subdivision, Closeburn, Queenstown.

While this idyllic location is just a ten minute drive from the vibrant heart of Queenstown, it is not a measure of distance that separates Jagged Edge from the excitement and adventure that Queenstown has to offer. The seductive tranquillity and the vast open space are daily reminders of what makes Jagged Edge so unique.

The peaceful and secluded location, together with the land formation and architectural design are what define Jagged Edge."

Fantastic piece of architecture in an even better setting. This ticks all the boxes for me and I for one would love to see more of this in Auckland.

I'm not a designer but clearly the last post is pathetic professional jealousy. That is an incredible design! Quite amazing to live in i would say, I see it is under construction, you can view a live webcam at www.jaggededge.-co.nz. These guys are truly inspiring, more at www.slant.co.nz and check out Mahina at www.mahinanz.co-.nz that is just fantastic!

I don't understand this at all, is this some kind of joke? Is this what happens when structural engineers are left alone with to much money and no aesthetic sensibility? And since when does a large concrete and glass shard become an extension of the surrounding landscape? Further more the structure isn't simple at all, it is heavy handed and clumsy. Examples of buildings (not architecture) like this only remind me of why I got into this industry in the first place...
