Iron Bank, Auckland, RTA Studio

Mar 2008

The IRONBANK complex comprises of 4500m sq. of retail and commercial office space around a landscaped plaza with 95 car parks accommodated in a mechanical car stacking machine below street level. It is located in the Karangahape Road precinct, which is a unique and historic area on the edge of Auckland’s CBD that is in a state of urban renewal.

The building is conceived as a manifestation of a cross contamination of two contrasting street conditions: Karangahape Road being concerned with notions of presentation, display, etiquette and heritage, while Cross Street is characterised by service, delivery, disorder and utility. The building design has taken the opportunity to address a transition between these two street conditions.

Ironbank is Ecologically Sustainably Designed (ESD) and when complete, it will be submitted to the New Zealand Green Building Council for a targeted 5 Green star as-built rating.
The project has been recognized with a Commendation award in the 2008 MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards.

Designed by RTA studio, structurally engineered by Brown & Thomson.

I jolly love this building. Obviously it's bold, but I would go as far as extreme, and so, stimulating which sadly is refreshing in Auckland. I watched with an excited and almost impatient anticipation and intrigue as it manifested itself humbly, as Emily described it it, upon Karangahape Road. It's delicious contrast in material and texture makes me want to touch it, or be a tenant just so I can be near it. Blimmen' excellent. I wish I could congratulate each and every enlightened and forward thinking individual involved in her evolution. We should celebrate and encourage such sophisticated boldness in my opinion.

I actually like the Cross Street facade better than the K'Road facade which is somewhat boring. It is undoubtedly one of the greatest, boldest and creative designs in Auckland. Thank god it wasnt any taller because good old NZ Herald would have ruined its prospects of being built by inviting all those NIMBYs to send in their so called 'views'. We need more of this in Auckland...Pity though that the designers are still stuck in the 70's and the council had no VISION whatsoever. To top it all off, we have a strong NIMBY population who will condemn every amazing project down the drain while the ugly buildings always go up unnoticed.

Like it a lot. Well done. A brave and bold step forward for Auckland (New Zealand?) architecture. It is almost a shame that it is not more visable and yet it works in that one has to make an effort to find and view the structure fully.

Fantastic ! The wackier the better, it is high time that Auckland starts to experiment with architecture and push the boundaries of good design. Well done RTA Studio. May you give us many, many more.

Iron bank is humble and magnificent building tucked behind K road. I believe that it has been fantastically done; from both sides (cross street and K road) from K road it has a very clever façade that blends in itself with K roads other building. It truly deserves Canne award. Hope there will be more of these types of projects in Auckland that can change the look of Auckland in very near future.

Bit "wacky" for my liking!
