eVolo 08 Skyscraper Competition
26
Mar 2008

eVolo invites architects, engineers and designers to take part in its fourth international architectural competition: 08 Skyscraper. The idea of the competition is to continue exploring on new ideas and concepts for verttical density. Skyscrapers have been springing up in fast-developing countries without careful consideration of the urban fabric, environmental effects, and quality of life. This year competition calls for innovative design for the XXI Century which takes into consideration the historical and social context, the existing urban fabric, the human scale, and the environment.

There is no restriction on site, height or shape. The idea is to give the designers enough freedom to address the challenge in the most creative and innovative way. Designs must be technologically feasible and environmentally responsible. The projects should also investigate on the urban and private space as well as the definition of new programmes for vertical structure.

The suburban sprawl has failed to deliver the kind of arcadian life style that was promised. It's turned into a life of isolation, the decoding of the family unit, the endless commute, cars, mental illness, more cars, and electronic devices that teach us, and keep us company. Now-, more than ever, the city is all we have left.

I have to say that before I saw the details of the last competitors in this challenge, the issue of my message was focussed in just one idea. I really appreciate the Architecture like an art, an Urban art nevertheless I am concern for the future generations, actually for our generation, about the high density population, the centralization of the people (and power) becoming in high pollution, high speed and therefore a low life style? I love the designs and like you can see, I am not an Architect or related... Anyway, I leave a discussion for the professionals: Is this kind of vision helping the future generations? Cheers. Andres.
